We leave tomorrow! Pat (of the Weather Duo) and I are the backing band for Anna Vogelzang's spring tour. Hello midwest! East coast later this spring.
I might post updates as we go, but I don't have a camera and can't afford one of those popular Internet Phones, so we'll see. Check out the dates on Anna's website; maybe I'll see you there! This last weekend, Bookless was held at the old Madison Central Library. The building has been emptied for future deconstruction/construction of a new library, and in a feat of absolute brilliance, the library was transformed into a modern art museum for a night. Over 100 Madison artists had exhibitions and installations, and local musicians and performers transformed the place into the event of the year. It was amazing! Lovely Socialite played, and with the help of Conor Fury-King, put together this video, which features the artwork, crowds, and our live performance: Full audio of our performance is available for stream/download here!
Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps is up to some exciting things! We've just finished recording our first album, and are now in the mixing stages. We recorded at Blast House Studios with the extremely adept Landon Arkins, and it's sounding amazing! An alternate take of my tune, 'Rock It, Science,' will appear on the Project Lodge benefit compilation album later this week. Lovely Socialite will be starting our own Kickstarter fundraising campaign in the next couple of weeks to help press the album. These videos are from our performance in the Mine All Mine Winter Series at the Dragonfly Lounge, another great development for the Madison music scene. I can't wait to share with you some tracks from the album! Preview: It will include the sounds of children screaming.
The next chance to see Lovely Socialite perform is January 28th, for Bookless, a really exciting event in a big empty library! I hope everyone's happily beginning the last year of the human race! Here are some things that are happening: The Project Lodge, an art gallery/performance space in Madison that has been the gracious host to many of my projects over the last couple of years, is in dire need of help! They've started a Kickstarter campaign, and you should pledge money immediately. (If you donate at least $25, you'll receive a compilation album that will include tracks from the Weather Duo and Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps) There is also a benefit concert on January 21st at the Majestic Theater that will be fantastic. I'll be playing with Anna Vogelzang, and other great Madison bands will be performing as well.
...................... Tonight marks the opening night of Glacial Wednesdays at the Dragonfly Lounge. This is a weekly residency of Glacier, through which we will be hosting crazy improvised music--guest performers, drink specials, the like. Come out and support creative music in Madison! Doors are at 8:30, and it is free! ...................... Some other performances I have coming up: Friday, Jan 13th: Performing with Page Foster at Wild Hog in the Woods Sunday, Jan 15th: Weather Duo at Broom Street Theater Monday, Jan 16th: Watercourse Quartet at Dobra Tea Wednesday, Jan 18th: Glacial Wednesday at Dragonfly Lounge Thursday, Jan 19th: Weather Duo at Dragonfly Lounge w/ Pillars and Tongues Saturday, Jan 21st: Project Lodge Benefit Concert at the Majestic Theater My friends over at Mine All Mine Records have reached the landmark of their 200th release, and to celebrate, they've released a pretty great compilation album. They've been gracious enough to include my track, 'living eye.'
I'd like to give particular plugs to the tracks from my friends, Tom Teslik, K.Wilhelm, John Praw, el-tin fun, and Man Mantis, but there's plenty of good stuff from people I don't know, too. (I really dig the Amy Hiller track! I've never met her! No nepotism!) This weekend I'm busy with performances of the Knotcracker, but the fun doesn't stop there! If you're around, I've got some performances I'm really looking forward to in the next couple of weeks: Dec 5th, Weather Duo will be making our debut at High Noon Saloon with our friends Asumaya, Fort Wilson Riot, and a new band to us, Phantom Riot. Should be really fun! Dec. 16th, Glacier will be playing at Audio for the Arts with the amazing Friction Brothers. They make amazing textural music with cello, percussion and dry ice. This is not to be missed! Dec. 17th, Lovely Socialite will be rocking the Dragonfly Lounge, a new venue in town, below the restaurant Bellini. And there's more! Maybe I'll see you soon. Glacier's been pretty busy the last few days. Last night, we played at Skylark in Chicago as a part of the Ratchet Series. It's quite an honor to play on that series--a lot of pretty remarkable acts have been a part of it. And on Friday, we played at a cool new coffee shop in Madison called Redamtè. I'm looking forward to returning! Here we are with me looking disproportionately large: Played some rock and roll music at the Electroacoustic Barn Dance in Fredericksburg, VA with the inimitable Jeff Herriott, our fantastic host, Mark Snyder, and the cool dudes who ran sound for the whole festival, Stephen Chew and Clayton Gregory.
This week, the Weather Duo heads southeast to Fredericksburg, VA, where we're playing at the Electroacoustic Barn Dance. We've been gearing up for that this week. In preparation, I made some electroacoustic music, which we are using in a piece that we'll perform on Friday: This bit consists entirely of piano sounds that I recorded myself playing on Sunday. It's fun, not being a pianist, to make "piano music." Perhaps sometime soon I'll work on a longer project of affected piano playing.
In addition to our performance in Fredericksburg, the Weather Duo will be heading to Arlington on Sunday, the 30th, to play a show at the CD Cellar. I'm certainly looking forward to this trip, a highlight of which will be teaming back up with Anna, who is returning stateside from her studies in Ireland to perform with us. Woo! Last week's concert was a blast! Some people have impressive devices devoted to capturing high-quality images of real-world events, but here are some shots that I captured with the mediocre imitation of such a device that my cellular phone is equipped with: I'm really excited for this concert on Wednesday:
