subatlantic songs is a theatrical performance for amplified double bass and voice.
"When I was listening, I saw a desert that was apocalyptically dark and swampy and mossy, and there was this glowing storm that was approaching and it was causing dust to rise from all the dead or, if not, prehistoric animals, first the birds, then the skeletons on the ground, and then the colonies of beetles underground, and they were coming back to life and they knew the approaching storm was going to destroy them but it was also bringing them back to life, so it was all strangely beautiful for them." -Rachel Epperly
In performative development since 2015, subatlantic songs is a set of rules that shapes the performance of improvising bassist Ben Willis. Introducing staging elements has guided the music and become a working score for the set. Performances include sets at Detroit's Strange Beautiful Music in 2017, and the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project's Re:Sound 2018 festival. the performance was chosen as a highlight by clevelandclassical.com, and reviewed here. the bird character was made by Mary Perrin of Mary's Monstrosities.
